Stress,
anxiety, bullying and other workplace related mental
health issues are now costing the Australian economy
over $15 Billion per annum. The direct cost to employers
now exceeds $10 billion per annum. In Human Resource
terms, one in five people are likely to suffer from
a significant mental health issue that will impair
their workplace performance. And of that only one
in five people are accessing current assistance
programs because of the social stigma attached with
these issues.
To manage this
situation effectively workplaces need to increase
resilience in staff. It is well known that workplace
stressors reduce the overall productivity of an
organisation so it’s important employers and
employees make a conscious effort to identify and
|
|
Resilience
by psychological definition is the positive capacity
of people to cope with stress and adversity. The
Resilience at Work conference is specifically structured
to provide employers and employees with a greater
understanding of the direct link between resilience
in the workplace and how to manage the key stress
related issues that business's and workplaces have
to deal with on a daily basis.
The
Resilience at Work conference will both challenge
and enable participants to look outside the box
when considering wellness in the workplace –
with new and innovative strategies and tools to
assist the individual in remaining that ‘One
Degree Below Boiling’ and more importantly,
in reducing their overall temperature.

that is required to remain as a principle
patron of his industry. Told with candor,
courage, and nods to his glory days, this

Lindy
Powell QC
Glass Ceiling
Resilience
Having practised law since her admission to
the Bar in 1973, Lindy has been exposed to
work in the law business as an employer, a
partner in a middle-sized firm, the Director
of a Government instrumentality employing
more than 150 lawyers and support staff, the
leader of her professional body and many years
at the independent bar.
|
The
role that each participant plays in the
legal team is crucial. Because everyone
needs to be performing at his or her best,
we have to look after each other through
the process. Every legal matter is like
a little microcosm of intense effort. They
each have their beginning, their process
and their end, playing out over differing
time frames.
One
thing that Lindy has learnt from each of
these individual matters, no matter how
short or long, is the importance of all
who work together in the legal team being
supported by each other and supportive of
each other. That support must be both professional
and personal if the best is to be achieved
for the client. All the participants have
to withstand difficult conditions. If those
about them don’t
recognise those difficulties and give assistance
to cope with them, then the proper and just
result is less likely to occur.
